More About Us
The Greek community is an integral part of the University of Minnesota and with all of the opportunities going Greek has to offer, it’s no surprise that 1,600 students choose the Greek community in order to become their best. Leadership, scholarship, service and community are the four fundamental principles Greek members live by.
Leadership:
It’s well known that Greeks are campus leaders, and at the University of Minnesota, this is no exception. In 2009, four fraternity and sorority members received prestigious President’s Student Leadership and Service Awards. In addition, in 2009, approximately one-third of Orientation and Welcome Week Leaders were fraternity and sorority members. The Greek community also provides leadership and personal development opportunities through programs such as the Emerging Greek Leaders Program, Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI), and a number of campus and fraternity/sorority leadership opportunities.
Scholarship:
Scholarship is vital to students; therefore, we make it one of our top priorities. Our fraternities and sororities provide tremendous academic resources and support for their members and this support shows. In 2008-09, Greek members earned a grade point average of 3.14 (All-Fraternity 3.10, All-Sorority 3.21). Also, students involved in the Greek community graduate at a higher rate than students who are not. The Greek community provides academic enhancement and support through interaction with chapters’ faculty/staff advisors, participation in fraternity/sorority academic programs and recognitions, and strong connections to academic resources on campus.
Service:
Service is a main component of Greek life. Each fraternity and sorority has its own service project and they take pride in accomplishing what they set out to do. In addition, Greek-wide service activities, such as Feed My Starving Children, are ways Greeks give back. Last year, Greek members gave 41,000 hours in community service and raised over $197,000 for philanthropic organizations.
Community:
The Greek Community makes the U of M feel like home. You can be yourself in our close-knit fraternities and sororities. You can get involved in the numerous activities Greeks participate in, including Homecoming, Spring Jam, and Greek Weekend. You can make lifelong friends. You can, and you will, feel right at home.
